Colorado Avalanche fire head coach; hire new GM

DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche have promoted Greg Shermanto general manager and fired coach Tony Granato and five others ina sweeping shakeup.

The team announced the moves Wednesday.

Sherman has spent the past seven years as the team's assistantgeneral manager and replaces Francois Giguere, who was let go inApril following the team's worst finish since moving to Denver in1995.

As part of a new management structure, the Avalanche appointedCraig Billington as vice president of hockey operations/assistantgeneral manager and David Oliver as director of player development.

Colorado also hired Eric Lacroix as director of hockeyoperations, while Brad Smith serves as director of playerpersonnel. Rick Pracey remains director of amateur scouting.
