Flyers take the lead on Devils

Brian Boucher had 23 saves in his first playoff start in eight years as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the host Devils, 2-1, in Game 1 of their first-round Eastern Conference series last night. Chris Pronger and Mike Richards scored second-period goals for the visiting Flyers.

Travis Zajac scored on a somewhat flubbed slap shot that seemed to bounce in front of Boucher with 2:43 to play to give the Devils hope. But Boucher stopped Patrik Elias in close with about 10 seconds to go.

Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur faced only 14 shots.

Senators 5, Penguins 4

Erik Karlsson and Chris Kelly scored on power plays in the second period as the Ottawa Senators defeated the defending Stanley Cup champions in a playoff opener. Evgeni Malkin scored two power-play goals for Pittsburgh and Sidney Crosby had three assists but no goals.

Flames fire coach

After missing the playoffs, the Atlanta Thrashers fired coach John Anderson and appointed Rick Dudley to replace Don Waddell as general manager. Waddell was bumped upstairs to team president . . . Davis Payne, who had been interim coach of the St. Louis Blues since Jan. 2, was named head coach. - AP
