A couple odds and ends before game time

 Talked to John Tavares about last night's World Junior's game and asked him if it conjured any fond memories.

"Not really, they lost," he deadpanned. In all seriousness, though he thought it was a great game.

"It was hard watching it and not being there," said Tavares. "It's a special thing to represent your country."

What gave team USA the edge?

"I think a couple of those tough games really helped them," Tavares said. "Usually Canda has one really good, sound game during the tournament and they didn't really have that. But they still did great and I was proud of 'em."

He also pointed out that it might not take too long before Canada is once again on top.

"The last time USA won, Canada won five straight after that," Tavares said with a smile. "Hopefully that happens again."

Before the game Andy Sutton said he was looking forward to examining the technique of fellow shot-blocker extraordinaire Brett Clark, who leads the league with 123 shots blocked.

Because of a facial injury, however, Clark will not play tonight. That means Sutton, who is currently third in the league with 107, can make up some ground....
