Islanders defenseman Andy Sutton will have a hearing at some point today regarding his hit on Pittsburgh's Pascal Dupuis. UPDATE: In anticipation of a necessary roster move in the case of Sutton's potential suspension, Nate Thompson has been placed on waivers.

Sutton received a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct after hitting Dupuis from behind and sending him face-first into the end boards at 17:05 in the third period of last night's 6-4 loss to the Penguins. After laying on the ice for several minutes where he was tended to by a team trainer, Dupuis skated off on his own with a towel over his bloodied face.

After the game, Sutton said he felt "awful" for the hit on his former teammate (they payed together in Minnesota and Atlanta)  and said he hoped Dupuis was okay. Sutton was very upset about the incident and displayed sincere remorse and honesty when asked about  it after the game.

Given that Sutton will have a hearing today, it looks likely that he will receive some sort of supplementary discipline. Because Sutton will still be included on the Islanders roster (currently holding 23) if he is suspended, the Islanders were forced to make a roster move to clear space in the event that they have to call up a defenseman from Bridgeport.

If I had to guess, I'd assume Dustin Kohn would be the guy they call up from Bridgeport if Sutton is suspended.
