With an empty-net shorthanded goal in last night's 5-2 win over the Lightning, 23-year-old rookie Michael Grabner furthered his case for Rookie of the Year.
Scoring his 31st goal of the season, Grabner has the most goals of any rookie in the league. He also passed Matt Moulson for the Islanders team lead.
With two points last night, the speedy Austrian winger is now only five points behind rookie scoring leader Jeff Skinner, who has 53 points (25 goals, 28 assists).
Below are some additional stats from the Islanders indefatigable statistician Eric Hornick:
--Grabner also leads all rookies with shorthanded goals (5) and shorthanded points (6).
--Grabner's 31 goals matches Bobby Ryan's output in 2008-09 season; The last rookie with more? Evgeni Malkin's 33 in 2006-07.
***Also, a quick note: Scary to think how many goals Grabner would have if he were more effective on all the breakaways his speed creates.
