Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro played in his third rehab game Friday night, stopping 25 of 28 shots for visiting Bridgeport in a 4-2 loss to Providence. The last Providence goal was an empty-netter.
Friday night was DiPietro's first game since Dec. 11, when he sat out the third period with leg tightness.
DiPietro, who has been rehabbing his surgically repaired knee since August, underwent evaluation for the leg discomfort with team doctors and additional specialists before receiving medical clearance to play in his second conditioning assignment for Bridgeport.
The Islanders wanted DiPietro to play a full game in the AHL without difficulties before targeting his NHL return. They have not yet said what the next step will be in getting back on the ice for them.
