Islanders try to end skid at 5

After dropping five straight and the first three games of their four-game road trip, the Islanders will try to snatch two points before they return home to Long Island.

Sitting in 13th place with 54 points, the Isles will also look to make up ground against the Tampa Bay Lightning, currently 8th in the Eastern Conference with 57 points.

The Lightning are coming off a 2-1 win over the Thrashers Tuesday.

Just ran into former Islander Nate Thompson on his way out to the ice; said he's doing well and it's been an easy transition for him. Thompson, a gritty hard-working fourth-liner for the Islanders the past two seasons, was placed on waivers a couple of weeks ago and claimed by Tampa Bay.

More on that later.

Also, defenseman Brendan Witt, who was placed on waivers yesterday, has until noon to be claimed by another team today. If that does not happen, he'll report to Bridgeport.
