Final Score--Devils 4, Islanders 3
Matt Moulson notched his second of the game to pull the Islanders within a goal , but the Isles couldn't even the score in the third.
As to be expected, there were some kinks to iron out, but remember, most of these guys are only playing their second pre-season game.
"Our starts have been pretty poor. We've got to be sharper out of the gates," captain Doug Weight said after the game. "The past couple games could've been different with a better start, but we showed some good fight toward the end of the game."
Playing his first meaningful game in 6-7 months, Weight already looks like a wholly different player from last season when he was battling through injury.
"I felt refreshed, I felt energized," said Weight, who picked up two assists. ""It was great to get some points, but for the most part I'm just glad I had the puck a lot. During practice I was telling myself I'd feel more patience, more feel. I had that and that excites me."
Matt Moulson said tomorrow's game will provide a last opportunity to sharpen up before the regular season.
"We've got some things to work on," he said. "[Tomorrow's game] will be pretty crucial because after that we only have practice to get ready."
Rob Schremp didn't seem to think his back spasms would be too serious and said he hopes he'll return soon. He said he suffered pain in his back after being cross-checked by Brian Rolston in second period.
End of 2nd period--Devils lead 4-2
The Devils build a 4-1 lead in the second period with a power-play slapper from Brian Rolston and a pretty give-and-go goal by Patrik Elias. Islanders cut the lead in half with Matt Moulson's first pre-season goal. Moulson converted a nice feed from Doug Weight for a PP goal and the team captain has picked up two assists through two periods.
With less than a minute left in the period, Rob Schremp went down and limped off toward the trainer's room. Will provide update when I can.
End of First Period--Devils lead 2-1
Jesse Joensuu gives the Islanders an early score with his goal at 1:38. The Finnish forward made a nice move to the net and backhanded one past Martin Brodeur. Jason Arnott's re-direct goal tied the game 1-1 at 5:05 and Zach Parise's wrister gave the Devils a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Devils outshot the Islanders 12-6 in the first frame.
