Isles drop 13th straight with 2-1 OT loss to Thrashers
See game recap in blog post above.
Isles lead Thrashers 1-0 after first period
Playing the second period with only five defenseman--Mike Mottau was taken to the hospital on a stretcher after getting hit with a shot in his right eye--the Islanders took a late lead with a goal by Michael Grabner.
The Austrian winger poked one through Pavelec's pads at 19:47 and the Islanders have now scored the first goal in two straight games. They surrendered the first goal in 10 of the previous 11 games.
Isles and Thrashers scoreless after first period
Isles were outshot 14-5 by the Thrashers in the first, but DiPietro has been pretty sharp in his first start since November 3.
Scary moment with 3:48 to play when defenseman Mike Mottau gets nailed in the right eye with a shot from Zach Bogosian; He was taken to the hospital on a stretcher.
Mottau went down hard and was pretty bloody as he was helped off the ice. This will be the second time in 8 days the Isles are forced to roll only 5 defensemen.
Winless in 12 games, the Islanders look for their first win in one month on the road against the Thrashers tonight.
Although the Thrashers are losers of three of their last four, they are coming off a dominant 5-0 win against the Capitals at Philips Arena Friday night.
Goaltender Rick DiPietro, who has not played since the team's 7-2 loss to Carolina November 3, will start tonight in the second of back-to-back games.
This is the Islanders fifth of 20 back-to-back sets this season, third most in the league only behind Buffalo (22) and Carolina.
No skate for the Islanders this morning. Quick turnaround with a 5 p.m. start this (late) afternoon.
