After serving a two-game suspension for directing a lewd gesture toward agitator Sean Avery in the Islanders 6-4 win over the Rangers Monday, James Wisniewski returns to the lineup tonight against Colorado.
With almost a week to reflect on his actions, the 26-year-old defenseman expressed remorse and regret for what happened earlier this week.
"Stuff like that can't be done in a game. At all, actually," Wisniewski said. "Kids being able to see that, it's not a good role-model situation for myself. Being a leader on the team and a six-year veteran, I can't do stuff like that."
Wisniewski said he was initially hoping the league would decide to simply fine him, but that he has come to terms with the decision.
"It is what it is," he said. "I can't do anything about it. It's up to the league. It's something that was wrong and I was ready to take the punishment."
And after being forced to watch his team battle two of the league's best teams--Washington and Pittsburgh--from his couch, Wisniewski is thrilled to be back in the lineup tonight.
"Ecstatic. I've only played two games now and our team has played four. Back-to-back games now so I'll be well-rested and hopefully I'll be out here and play a lot of minutes and help the team win."
