With his team trailing 1-0 in the second period, John Tavares rattled off three straight goals within 5:46 to score his second hat trick of the season.
Sparked by Tavares' trio of goals, the Islanders put up a four-spot on Sabres netminder Ryan Miller to take a 4-1 lead into the third; Blake Comeau chipped in for his fifth goal in six games at 15:25.
Tavares' natural hat trick is the first for an Islanders since Matt Moulson accomplished the feat December 3 last season. Tavares is the first Islanders to record two hat tricks in a season since Jason Blake in 2006.
His first career hat trick was wasted in the team's 4-3 loss to Florida October 23, the game that began the team's atrocious 12-game winless streak.
The 20-year-old center appears to have the last laugh against Miller tonight after the Olympic-medal goaltender stuffed him at the near post on a 2-on-0 rush in the first period.
