The transaction comes on the heels of yesterday's news that Rick DiPietro will miss 4 to 6 weeks with facial fractures and knee swelling. DiPietro sustained the facial injuries after getting smoked by a punch from Brent Johnson in a goalie fight at the end of Wednesday's 3-0 loss in Pittsburgh.
The gigantic 6-foot-6 Finnish prospect, selected by the Islanders in the second round of the 2009 draft, is 5-15-0 in 20 games for Bridgeport this season. The 22-year-old has a 3.64 goals against average and .883 save percentage.
The Islanders signed Bridgeport goaltender Joel Martin to a two-way NHL contract yesterday, allowing them the ability to call him up in the future as well.
