Rangers and Islanders shoot it out

When the Rangers and Islanders face each other, crazy things can happen, such as on this night when 17,416 fans at Madison Square Garden saw the teams combine for 88 shots on goal. In the first period alone, there were 37 shots, the Rangers holding a 19-18 edge. The Islanders took a 4-0 lead in the game before the Rangers rallied with five unanswered goals to win, 5-4, in overtime. The teams were even in shots after the second (32-32) and third (42-42) periods, before the Rangers outshot the Islanders in overtime, 3-1, for a 45-43 final margin. Reijo Ruotsalainen, the Rangers scoring leader in the 1984-85 season, scored the game-winner 57 seconds into the overtime period. He also had two assists.
