Keeping things loose in the hours before today's USA vs. Canada gold medal Olympic game, the Islanders had a split-squad 4-on-4 scrimmage at Nassau Coliseum this afternoon with the American (plus European) players took on the team's Canadian contingent.
A precursor of what's to come? Who knows, but the Canadian team prevailed 2 games to one.
In the spirited scrimmage, Rob Schremp (USA, Fulton, NY) and Josh Bailey (Canada, Bowmanville, Ontario) both had two goals apiece for their teams.
A bunch of guys on the team are planning on gathering to watch the game so you can bet there will be some healthy wagers.
Both Andy Sutton and Marty Biron predicted a Canada victory. The Only way USA gets a win? Biron said that happens only if Robert Luongo has an iffy game. Biron also predicted USA goaltender Ryan Miller will be the MVP of the tournament.
Of course Islanders coach Scott Gordon will be behind the bench for Team USA, but that remains the only Islanders connection.
The Islanders other olympian, swiss captain Mark Streit, made a surprise appearance at the conclusion of practice today. Streit is back home from Vancouver after his team lost to USA in the quarterfinals earlier this week.
