Chris Chelios, the 48-year-old defenseman now wearing 24 for the Thrashers, confirmed that there were discussions with the Rangers before he agreed to a deal with the AHL Chicago Wolves.
"Yeah, I think in the 24 years I played I don’t think never lost a game there (at the Garden),"said Chelios, who was recalled before Thursday's game against Columbus, was on ice for 13:14, and will play tonight. "I had a great feeling in that rink. I just thought it would be a good fit with their young defenseman. It just didn’t work out. They wanted to go with young guys and they have to get that experience and I understand that. It’s the same situation here, and if I can stick around long enough and help the team, great."
Chelios said there wasn't any chirping about his veteran status in Columbus upon his return against the Blue Jackets, but, "It’s coming. I’m sure Aves is gonna have something to say tonight." When told that Sean Avery was benched, he responded: "I’d better check my phone for a text message... If that’s the only thing they go after is my age, I don’t have a problem with that."
