GREENBURGH, N.Y. - Rangers center Derek Stepan has a bruised foot and likely will be held out of Monday night's preseason opener against the Devils at Madison Square Garden.

Stepan, who also missed the first 16 days of training camp last season before agreeing to a two-year contract, did not skate in Sunday's scrimmage and is listed as day-to-day. It was unclear if he aggravated an earlier bruise on Saturday or if it was a fresh bruise. X-rays were negative.

Stepan had been skating daily after limping off during his second informal skate here on Sept. 9, when he was struck by a shot on the left skate. Play stopped as Stepan, the team's second-leading scorer last season with 57 points, stayed on his knees for a minute or two, then skated off without putting pressure on the foot. He returned to the ice the next day.

Stepan suffered a broken jaw in late May on a hit from former Ranger Brandon Prust during the Rangers-Canadiens playoff series. He underwent surgery and later played with a face guard.

Henrik Lundqvist is expected to start Monday night. Newcomers Dan Boyle, Ryan Malone, Matt Lombardi and Tanner Glass are expected to play.
