Remember 1997? Bill Clinton's second term. Hotel California. Buena Vista Social Club. My Aim is True. Sheep Dolly cloned. The Dow closed above 700 for the first time. IBM Deep Blue beat Garry Kasparov in the rematch. The Timothy McVeigh bombing trial in Denver (my wife was covering it for a TV network and my daughter and I flew West for a few days to hang with her and catch a game at Coors Field)
It also was the last time your Rangers and Knix were in the post-season together and the little entertainment venue on 7th and 33rd was humming. The 2011 roll starts here tonight with Game 1 vs Caps. For Carmelo & Co., the Celtics await.
But back to the Bleushirts. You may recall that in those East quarters, the Rangers dispatched the Panthers 4-1. In the semis, it was 4-1 Rangers over those pesky Devils. Then, in the conference Finals, it was 4-1 again, but this time, the Flyers had the edge.
No. 99 had nine goals, Graves and Tikkenen had about four game winners. Richter won nine of 15 with three shutouts and I'm pretty sure Garth Snow was in the net for the Flyers.
Tonight, the second season starts here at Verizon Center, where I'll be in an hour for the Rangers skate and some remarks from coach John Tortorella.
We'll fill you in on that this afternoon, mix in some stats and memories of the Rangers-Caps playoffs ovah the years (Rangers have a losing record 14-15, dontcha know).
So please stay tuned here and twitter.com/stevezipay today and thru the series. And remember our live chat at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Have a feeling there will be pa-lenty to discuss...
