NHL hearing on Ryan McDonagh hit this morning, more...

The Bruins' Andrew Ference goes on the carpet----by phone---for his run on Ryan McDonagh in overtime that knocked the Rangers defenseman out of yesterday's matinee, which the Rangers won 3-2 on Marian Gaborik's second goal of the day.

Phone hearings generally result in a suspension of less than five games. The guess here is three.

McDonagh flew back with the team last night and there was no official update on his condition, but he may have sustained a concussion. Read all about the terrific game at TDGarden, the hit, quotes and stats in two stories on newsday.com.

And don't forget to check my Sunday Insider as well, with a piece on another American prospect, J.T. Miller, a look at mandatory helmets during warmups, what some Rangers are doing on the All-Star break and why a 2.80 goals against average has been a playoff factor in the East.

With Jeff Woywitka (bone bruise/foot) cleared for contact, it is likely that he will play for McDonagh in the remaining game before the All-Star break at home on Tuesday against WInnipeg.  Defenseman Steve Eminger (separated shoulder) is several weeks away. Another option is Tim Erixon, who is playing for the Whale.

The Rangers have a scheduled off-day today but will likely update McDonagh's condition.
