No score after 1; 5 on 3 fizzles

The Rangers had a golden, no, make that platinum opportunity, to grab a lead with a 5 on 3 for 1:25 late in the third period, but could not cash in. Matt Hendricks had gone off for interference at 17:20 and then Mike Knuble 35 seconds later for clearing the puck over the glass. The Rangers set up in the Caps zone, but kept passing it around the perimeter, fruitlessly looking for an open shot, instead of shooting and battling for a rebound. Onlt Derek Stepan and Vinny Prospal got shots on Neuwirth, and before the 5 on 4 was over, Erik Christensen was sent off for goaltender interference at 19:43.
As a result, at the end of the first period, the Rangers hadn’t scored in the last 158:24 of the series. A period that featured spurts of physical play by the Rangers, but still not enough shots on the rookie goaltender, concluded scoreless.
