Vinny Prospal out indefinitely. Chris Drury skating alone, still out. Ruslan Fedotenko unsigned, but could have deal later today. Brass looking at waiver wire.
"He worked so hard all summer to get in shape," Michal Rozsival said of Prospal. "He practiced (last week), was fine, went to lunch and then the knee swelled up. Now he can't be here to start the season. You just hope there's some kind of magic cure." If there's no improvement after a couple weeks of rest, surgery cannot be ruled out if Prospal wants to continue his hockey career, sources said. The Post, citing a source, reports that surgery could finish Prospal for the season.
Practice was 90 minutes today, followed by the annual charity golf outing.
The lines and d-pairs (without Marc Staal, banged-up hip, but will be ready for opener):
Alex Frolov-Erik Christensen-Marian Gaborik
Brandon Dubinsky-Artem Anisimov-Ryan Callahan
Sean Avery-Derek Stepan-Ruslan Fedotenko
Derek Boogaard-Brian Boyle-Brandon Prust
Spares: Tim Kennedy, Todd White
Michael Del Zotto-Dan Girardi
Matt Gilroy-Mike Sauer
Steve Eminger-Michal Rozsival
Coach John Tortorella said Fedotenko's play (at 1-6-7, the team's leading pre-seaosn scorer) "speaks for itself" , but leaves contract details to the front office.
As written yesterday, with lefty d-men Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko assigned to Hartford for more seasoning, five of the seven left are right-handers Eminger and Gilroy could shift to the left, Tortorella said, but IMO, not ideal. I tweeted and wrote the other day that Shane O' Brien, waived by Vancouver, could be an option, but he's due $1.6 mil. Not only that, he could be claimed by a team before the Rangers. (UPDATE: O'Brien cleared at noon). Sheldon Souray, whom Oilers are trying to move, has three times the cap hit.
