Post-game Xtra from Texas: Notes, Quotes, Stats

DALLAS---- Mark Staal (33:06) and Dan Girardi (31:31) seemed never to leave the ice because Stars coach Mark Crawford kept putting out Brad Richards, James Neal and Loui Eriksson, which registered just one poiunt, Eriksson’s on the power play goal by Ribiero. “It’s a dangerous line. I tried to use Brian Boyle’s line mostly against them, but couldn’t get that all of the time, so other people kicked in too," said coach John Tortorella. "That’s their top line, it gave us a chance to win.”

Henrik Lundqvist on his improved puck-handling and his third assist of the season: “That was the last thing Glen (Sather) told me before I went home last year, I just have to be better around the net. I’ve started to feel like I’m better placing the puck for the D, not so much as making great passes, just touching pucks into the corners for the D to pick up in speed, and I’ve started to get more comfortable passing the puck, I don’t think I’m better or worse than anybody else in the league, but around the net I can definitely can be better.”

The power play, 0-for-13, came through in a big spot at 8:04 of the third to tie the game at 2. Tortorella: “They score a power play goal, we score a shorthanded goal, we needed something from our power play, and Artie makes a great shot. It’s not about percentages about our power play right now, it’s about trying to score a timely goal and that’s a huge time for it to work. ”

In his NHL debut, Ryan McDonagh played 21 shifts, 12:03. “He can skate in the National Hockey League,” said Tortorella. “I think early he was a little tentative, he had a couple good shifts, held in there on the blue line, kept a couple pucks in offensively. But I want to look at the tape.”

Torts on Zuccarello’s skill in the shootout. “It’s good stuff. No nerves, he just does his job, I think it’s terrific.”

What Tortorella senses about his team’s third period presence; Rangers are a pretty impressive  5-9-3 when trailing after two. “There’s no panic. That’s a pretty good sign for a young team here, just to stay patient and keep on trying to play. I’m not saying we’re gonna win them all, there’s going to be nights they’ll score two or three on us in the third period, but I’m comfortable with our mindset.”

The Rangers had 31 shots, Stars 30….It was the Rangers’ first win in Dallas since Dec. 14, 2006….Girardi was back on the power play point because Tortorella wants Stepan more in space...Alex Frolov and Derek Stepan each had five shots
