Prospect Camp Day 1: Observations

                 Live from Eastview in Westchester:

Just rugged conditioning drills/testing in camp today, followed by two-mile run....One new addition to coaching side was Barbara Underhill, a Canadien world championship skater who was taking notes and will offer some technical assistance this week....Adam Graves, J.J. Daignault on ice; Torts in executive box above, still recovering from hip replacement surgery....No lines, shots ...scrimmages start tomorrow;  the head coach wants to see the 28 invitees (15 F, 9 D, 4 G) in game action...So do I...

Have feeling that brass would love to see Derek Stepan make the club... College teammate Ryan McDonagh, as tweeted, has size to be NHL-ready, but won't decide whether to stay at Wisconsin for senior year (as captain and with possibility of NCAA championship) or sign until he gets a test of the club this week...A gassed D Jyri Niemi, obtained from Isles, stretched out along the boards after one of the sets of sprints....Like the look of Minnesota's Chris McKelvie, three points in six games for Hartford last season...BC's Chris Kreider (who went to Citifield for Mets-Twins Saturday) has grown in the past year, didn't recognize him at first...Andrew Yogan, the 1st NHL draftee from Florida, has good size and strength...Evgeny Grachev (6-4,220), being followed like a puppy by rookie Russian Mikhail Pashnin, said he doesn't want to add more weight... Swede Jesper Fasth, drafted in sixth round, can't get here in time to make it worthwhile, I'm told...No. 10 pick Dylan McIlrath was to arrive in NY at 3, will skate Tuesday...Torts was a little miffed about TV commentary knocking the kid being picked so high. ...

               More later....
