Quotes & Anniversaries: Torts on Biron; Rupp on Rupp, Myers, Staal; Rooks ready: Stepan, Sauer

More Rangers and Sabres quotes from a full notebook:

Tortorella on Biron, who began talking to Sabres reporters and others in the HSBC hallway around 10:45, practiced and then held court in front of his locker. “His personality, it’s infectious,” said Torts.
Mike Sauer, 23, who played three games for the Rangers in 2008-09 as a callup and made the club out of camp this time: “It feels good… you come to training camp hoping you’ll be in the opening game. It’s still early in the season, you’ve got to prove yourself… You’ve got to live in the present and make the most of it.”
Tortorella on Lundqvist: “If you watch how this guy prepares and how he practices, you couldn’t help but be tired at the end of the year... We want to try to keep him fresher.”

Unflappable Derek Stepan, whose routine for his NHL debut will include a nap: “I’m more excited than nervous; it’ll kick in eventually…”

Lindy Ruff on outstanding young D Tyler Myers and Marc Staal: “(Myers) skates so effortlessly, you can play him 30, 35 minutes. He doesn’t look like he skating, but you see the length of his stride. Over the summer, we gave him some stuff (to work on) in the d-zone, can’t give him a whole bagful of stuff.”

“Staal plays smart out there. He’s one of those young guys who totally understands the game. He’s one of the top defenders, I’m not sure he gets enough recognition.”

Heard Around….

For the 40th anniversary of the team, The Buffalo News has named the Top 40 Sabres. Ruff was voted No. 40. So he says at the end of his morning briefing: “I think they said, “We’ve gotta put him in, he’s been around so long’… if they see some of those old videos, I’d be out of the Top 40.” Don’t have the list in my hands yet but I’m told Dominik Hasek was 1, Gilbert Perreault was 2, Jim Schoenfeld was No. 10, Chris Drury 17….And speaking of 40th anniversaries, he wasn’t at the morning skate (shocker), but Happy 40th at MSG to my man Bobby Lewis, the director who started in 1970 as a tape librarian carrying 4-inch quad reels about the size of a manhole cover....My rental Dodge Avenger has XM/Sirius, so it was Bluesville time on I-90 and 190 driving back and forth from Amherst....Yeah.....See my baby walkin' down the street...
