Transcript of AV presser this am at MSG:
On Marc Staal:
“Marc has been diagnosed with a concussion. The doctors don’t feel it’s a serious as the one he might’ve had in the past, so he’s feeling better, and we’ll take it day by day. He’s been in contact with (neurologist Dr. Jeffrey Scott Kutcher) that we’ve used in the past, but he doesn’t feel the need to see him at this point.”
Surprised by lack of goals from centers?
“Not sure if I’m surprised by it...I’m disappointed in our compete level, our consistent compete level, it’s just not there, the way you need it to be…it’s such a competitive league, so that might have something to do with the fact that we’re not generating as much offense.”
Dorsett and Asham are in?
“Yes. I expect them to bring what they usually bring, which is a physical dimension to the game; if they do that, they’re going to be useful to our team and hopefully they can do that tonight.”…(Dom Moore also back in; Benoit Pouliot, Taylor Pyatt are healthy scratches)
On McDonagh: “He’s been by far our best defensemen and one of our best overall players. He’s playing with a lot of poise and a lot of maturity with and without the puck. He’s one of the guys, that coming in here, they told me, that he had more potential and was just a young player on the upswing. He’s done that so far.”
In Marc’s absence, how important is his presence: “He’s already playing big minutes against top line players. Not quite sure how much more I can ask out of him. What I need is for some of the other guys, for quite some time who have probably been hoping for a bigger role, a bigger opportunity, so here it is, let’s grab it.”
Using John Moore on the right side?
“Still debating that, both Moore and Falk have had their moments in the last game, so we’re hoping that there will be less of those moments, both of them; their intentions are real good, two solid persons.”
Keeping Michael with Stralman?
“I would say tonight would it’s a safe bet there might be some juggling depending on performances.”
No need for seventh D?
“No, it’s real easy for us to call Hartford, and to, if we need somebody, to have them here in a couple hours…”
If you go the way, you looked this morning, you want Brassard in a top six role, is that why you’re shifting things?
“I’m shifting things because we’re .500. So I think at .500, I’ve got some latitude here. I’m putting in two players that bring more of a physical bite to our team, maybe that will make some other players compete at a higher level. I look at the Detroit Red Wings---who I know well, because I coached against them for the last seven years---they’ve had no toughness, per se, as far as that type of personality, at no point other than (Jordin) Tootoo the last couple of years, but those guys play hard, they have the puck and they say “Try and get it from me” or if they don’t have it, they battle like hell to get it back. That’s the team toughness that I’m hoping we get here. Maybe we’ll get there by changing some personnel, adding a little more toughness, we’re at .500, I’m trying.”
