The Post-game Xtra: Notes, Quotes, Stats

The Rangers went first in last night's shootout, coach John Tortorella's preference, but not Henrik Lundqvist's, who'd like to make the first save to put pressure on the opponent. Here's how it was decided:

"I had it in my mind," Tortorella said, "and I asked him right there, 'What do you want to do?' and Hank was kind of in-between. I didn't say 'we're going to do it my way, I said, 'We're going first'. He wasn't adamant, and if he's adamant, you give it to him. So he's screwed now because we're going first all the time now."

Zuccarello played just 8:24, but came through in the shootout, slowing down, deking and tucking a forehander past Bernier...Christensen scored on a reacharound with Bernier way to his right...."I always know my move before I pick up the puck. You have a greater chance of screwing up if you are deciding what you're doing as you are going in." ...Wolski's attempt missed the net....Tortorella said he called a timeout late in the third, leading 3-2, because assistant coach Mike Sullivan wanted to give Marc Staal and Dan Girardi a breather and to match them against Kopitar's line. "It didn't work," he said...

With his 200th win, Lundqvist is tied for fourth with John Vanbiesbrouck on the team's all-time list. ...The Rangers are 6-2 in shootouts, the Kings 7-2....Ryan McDonagh blocked a team-high four shots and was a plus-3...His d-partner Michael Sauer also was a plus-3. "It's a good test for those two young kids, they played well,"  Tortorella said. Sauer's  pass up the boards freed Marian Gaborik (six shots, like Boyle) for his rush and goal.  "I tried to shoot through a screen and it was rolling so it was kind of a knuckleball," he said. Jonathan Bernier said he "lost it in the stands"...Dan Girardi was on ice for 28.23 and had a career-high eight hits..

The Rangers are 31-24-4 for 66 points, with 23 games to play, four points over eigth place Carolina and six points up on Atlanta and Buffalo....Callahan was the first star of the night for the second straight game....Tortorella said Artem Anisimov (goal and assist) was fine after limping off in pain in the third after blocking a wicked slap shot with his foot...
