With a chance to jump back into seventh place ahead of the Islanders, and create a little space between the Rangers and Devils, a win or an overtime/shootout loss will help, one more than other, naturally. But points are at a premium with a dozen games to go.
Torts on tonight: “I view this game as another game to get points. There is nothing else in our mind.”
On Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello: “You can see the skill in Brassard. Zuke has come in and adds that type of creativity. Brassard immediately paid dividends on the power play for us and Zuke has created offense. You don’t design plays when you deal with skilled guys. We coached the manufactured part of our concept: Zuke goes to the net, on McDonagh’s goal, opens up McDonagh.”
On Brian Boyle: “The past three or four games, he’s played good. When Brian is on the wall more, as a winger, it seems to help his game. I played him at all three positions. He’s been rewarded being put on the power play. You put him and Clowe, two big bodies, around the net, and we scored a big goal on the power play. He knows how important he can be for this team in order to right it. I think some good things are happening for him, so he feels more relaxed, more confident.”
On defense: “If you’re going to win, every team needs to play defense, we don’t hinder the offense by playing defense. It doesn’t start in your end zone, defense starts when you don’t have the puck. That could be 180 feet down the ice; that’s when your forechecking takes over. Playing away from the puck isn’t in your end zone.”
