Here's Torts on the 6-3, 227 pound Woywitka, obtained on waivers from Montreal on Oct. 6. He's played five games, has one assist and is a plus-3, but....
"It’s a pretty quick hockey club we’re playing. I’m a little concerned about that with Jeff, and it gives us a chance as far as his conditioning. We’re going to push him pretty hard today. As our defense goes, we’ll make decisions as each game goes by. It’s not like he’s been dreadful, I want to get Bellsie in there, and also gives us a chance with his conditioning, and we did a lot of tape work with him this morning."
Bell, who has played 101 NHL games, but none as a Ranger since being signed as a free agent on Aug. 9, was ready to go:
"I don't know if it's a sigh of relief, but I'm excited," Bell said. "This is what I worked for all summer and why I wanted to come here, so I hope to make the best of an opportunity. I know where I'm at...you just hope you've done enough and worked hard enough to get into a game here and there. For tonight, I'm good and hopefully I can do enought to stay in the lineup. My skating's always been a positive, it's somehing I've done a lot of work on, so playing against a fast team, it gives defensemen a little more trouble, but hopefully I can use some of my strengths to negate some of the positives they bring." Interesting the faith Torts has in Tim Erixon over the vets...
Torts on why he's sticking with a fourth line of Kris Newbury, Mike Rupp and Erik Christensen, and Wolski, who has been nagged by a groin issue, but is a healthy scratch:
"They’re doing some things that we’ve asked them to do. They’re not getting a lot of ice time, I know, six or seven minutes. Erik has done some things I’ve asked him to do, he’s shown effort in other areas, he’s improved. Newbs comes in, he finishes checks, he fights for his teammates, eventually I think he can help us in faceoffs as I feel more comfortable with him; Rupper scores a goal and fights a guy, so I don’t think I need to change that. Having said that, Wools (Wolski) is a guy who scored 60 points in this league and eventually we’ve got to try to get that out of him, but right now as we win a couple games, that situation isn’t going to change tonight.
On the goaltending situation: " We feel Hank is fresh and he’s certainly been outstanding as we start this year…Marty will play, we have a plan for him throughout the year." My guess, as previously noted: Biron plays in The Peg Monday, Hank in the home opener on Thursday and then it's back to Biron at MSG a week from today in the matinee against the Sens.
