Off to the airport to fly to Raleigh in a hour or so, but a couple thoughts first:
Discouraging clunker in Sunrise last night, especially with so much on the line.
But that’s the consistent inconsistency we’ve written and talked about virtually all of the season, especially after losses on the road: Buffalo, Philly, the oh-for-Canada six-game streak. Your Blueshirts are 9-12-2 on the road. No chance to be .500. Really good teams are at least .500 in away games. And now the Hurricanes coming up.
Yeah, the Rangers are 2-0 against the this season, but are you really, really secure enough thinking two points on Thursday?
Back to Tuesday night for a second.
Honestly was surprised at the lack of grit, sustained forecheck and net presence in the opposite crease, which is what your boys need.
At 1-1 early in the third, given the flow of the game, gotta say I thought they’d get a point or possibly two, and I know the coach and I have had some disagreements over the past few years (ahem), but he’s right about the PK. The penalty’s an issue, but Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh, one of them, needs to clear the puck in that spot, which of course, they shouldn’t have been in.
Having said that, I believe Stepan will rebound Thursday. He has two goals in the two games against the Canes -- one of those wins was a shootout, 2-1 at MSG, and Rick Nash had the winner. Nash, who really needs to put the puck in the net Thursday, also scored in the 4-1 win in Raleigh on April 6. Plus, the PK has been 8-for-8 in the two games.
But the word that defines the season, again, is inconsistency.
More from North C later....
