Steve Matthews' Belmont selections for Sunday, Sept. 30

Best Bet: VARENKA (9); Best Value: CARLINO (8)

FIRST: Rucksack owns an edge on late-pace and final figures; demand square price on barn that's moribund. Zealous is training sharply for first start with maiden-claiming tag; dangerous. Chateau owns five seconds and four thirds from 15 starts; minor spoils again?

SECOND: Free N Clear drops and makes peak start of form cycle; call based on price potential. Grandpa's Arianna regressed in last after fast-figured win in previous start; rebound threat. Bonita Springs fired half-mile bullet since last start; don't ignore.

THIRD: Foolish Ghost projects as the main speed with aggressive ride. Flipped has trained sharply since breaking maiden in June; dangerous. Carmine's Honor exits game placing in last; right in the thick of this.

FOURTH: Born for a Storm packs potent kick and is working sharply for first start since May; primed and ready. Suas was a clear-cut maiden winner in last; must consider. Barely Impazible has delivered strong efforts in both starts; logical short-priced player.

FIFTH: Utiki logged two sharp works since displaying speed in sprint debut; controlling front-runner. Introspection was a fast-figured second in last; very dangerous. Dovey Lovey was just a length behind Introspection when third on Sept. 2; must be factored into the mix.

SIXTH: Sentry has trained with a purpose since overcoming soft flow to win on Aug. 2; rail draw seals the deal. Winter Union also has worked sharply since fast-figured victory in last; easily could take another. High Promise was victimized by wide trip in last; must be considered.

SEVENTH: Her Latest Film was a change-of-pace fifth in last; breakthrough predicted. Tapping Colors fell victim to poor start in race taken off the turf last time; return to turf and better getaway are the keys. Cover Model was a strong fourth in lone grass start; don't ignore.

EIGHTH: Carlino was a determined winner in last and owns faster back numbers; pairs up. War Story consistently logs the field's fastest pace and final figures; likely underlay. You're to Blame bested War Story by a neck when winning last; right in the thick of this.

NINTH: Varenka gets Lasix after notching swift late-pace figure when a clear-cut second in last; more to give. Dogtag bested top selection by a length after tough trip last out; very dangerous. Newspaperofrecord lived up to heavy tote support when winning debut by nearly seven lengths; big-time player.

TENTH: Codrington gets class relief and owns fast back numbers; call in wide-open nightcap. Theodosia is riding a forward line on the numbers; worth long look. Keota exits hard-charging maiden score in last; dangerous. Rosebud's Hope is riding a two-race winning streak and makes first start since claimed by Jorge Navarro; easily could take another.
