Steve Matthews' Belmont selections for Sunday, Oct. 10

Best value: TEMPLE (8)

FIRST: Nyquest Nix was second to stakes-winning rival last out; sharp, recent works seal the deal. Galt is firing bullets for switch to sod; very interesting. Payback Period is a newcomer from the Chad Brown barn; need more?

SECOND: Heads Or Tails noticeably picked up the tempo in final work on Wednesday; ready. Silver Samurai owns speed but lacks heart; class drop makes difference? Raw Courage is training with a purpose for return from two-month freshener; don't ignore.

THIRD: First Homestead has won five of last six; keeps on giving. Aristocratic could play out as the main speed with heads-up handling; very playable. Crea's Bklyn Law could be in the catbird seat if pace meltdown ensues.

FOURTH: Abaan was a front-running winner in last and projects as the controlling speed once again. Onenightstandards could be the prime beneficiary if top selection hits the wall. Shady McGee also closes and has the benefit of the rail; must be factored into the mix.

FIFTH: Slipstream could be ideally positioned in the stalker's seat. Chi Town Lady has yet to taste defeat in two starts; be no surprise. Poppy Flower is speedy and could prove very tough on a soft lead.

SIXTH: Horologist, 1-for-1 at Belmont Park, can win from on or just off the pace; versatility is key. Royal Flag owns fast late-pace figures; big-time player. Miss Marissa logs swift final numbers on "A" efforts.

SEVENTH: Hoboken Jack has trained sharply since even fourth in debut; forward move predicted. Bossmakinbossmoves is working strongly for first start; follow the money. Phoebe's Frosty, another newcomer, is firing bullets at Fair Hill training base; could be the goods.

EIGHTH: Temple made determined rally to win last and hails from streaking stable (Tom Morley); pairs up. Breaking the Rules, another last-race winner, owns faster back numbers; very dangerous. Sacred Life, just a half-length behind second selection last out, makes third start of form cycle; could easily overcome the deficit.

NINTH: Bail Out is 0-for-24 but returns from much-needed freshener; now or never. Deferred Taxes drops and logged three works since last start; big-time contender. My Boy Colton was a game second at 17-1 last time; worth long look. Prayer Book could impact if fractions get fast and furious.
