Steve Matthews' Belmont selections for Thursday, Oct. 14

Best bet: LOKOYA ROAD (7)

FIRST: Big Wonder drops and wheels back in a hurry after speed and fade last week; call based on price. U.S. Steel, a front-end winner in last at Monmouth, could play out as the controlling front-runner once again. Qian B C would be aided by pace meltdown; don't ignore.

SECOND: Knightly Mischief has worked five times since improved fourth in last; more to come. Drosel Diem also took forward step in last; dangerous. Resilient Courage was a clear-cut second in most recent; be no surprise.

THIRD: Copa has trained with a purpose since claimed from wire-to-wire win in July; main speed with proper ride. Him She Kisses was a tough-trip fifth in last; worth long look. Mr. Briggs makes swift return after being dueled into defeat this past Saturday; very interesting.

FOURTH: Duckphat logged fast late-pace figure when a hard-charging third last time; more to give. Caumsett could prove very tough on a soft lead. Fist Full of Dice is riding a forward line on the numbers; must consider.

FIFTH: Swashbuckle notched both wins on Belmont sod; class drop seals the deal. Opt needed last and should be aided by added ground. Prince of Pharoahs was a determined winner in last; right in the thick of this.

SIXTH: Dom's Feisty Girl is rested, working with a purpose and drops; call in weak maiden field. Captivating Cara could be ideally positioned in the stalker's seat. Ob La Di owns speed and will offer juicy price; very interesting.

SEVENTH: Lokoya Road gets confident class boost after determined win in last; pairs up for new connections. Therisastormbrewin is fleet-footed and looms a serious front-end threat. Fast Break is fresh and owns fast figures on "A" efforts.

EIGHTH: Windfall Profit is training sharply for first start in seven weeks; primed. Miss Delicious could prove very tough on a soft lead; must be factored into the mix. Messidor was a tough-trip third in last; dangerous.

NINTH: D'vinicris returns to turf and drops back in with NY breds; throw deep in wide-open nightcap. Majestic Tiger packs potent kick on best efforts; dangerous. I Gen moves to turf for Christophe Clement; worth a look. Big Little Risk owns speed and drops; don't ignore.
