Steve Matthews' Belmont selections for Saturday, Oct. 9

Best Bet: BOLDISH (3); Best Value: SANDRO THE GREAT (11)

FIRST: Strong Point 's strong points are her class drop and tight workout tab; call in weak opener. Malibu Anthem also is training sharply and owns fast numbers on best efforts. Superbloodwolfmoon faced a pricier field on grass six days ago; very interesting.

SECOND: Sweet Surprise should be aided by added ground; call based on price. Vagaries tallied fast late-pace figure in debut for Chad Brown; underlay material. Hope Over Fear and Gun Boat both own speed and must be factored into the mix.

THIRD: Boldish tallied swift final fraction when breaking maiden last out; stretch to mile plays to strength. Cousin Andrew fired half-mile bullet since displaying improved speed in last; very dangerous. Giocare is fresh and owns swift back numbers; must consider.

FOURTH: Matt Doyle was a useful fifth in debut; forward move predicted. Fishing for Fun owns two seconds and a third form three starts; logical contender. Zandon debuts for Chad Brown; any questions?

FIFTH: Following Sea tallied career-best number when winning by more than six lengths in lone start at Belmont; it's all about the price. Firenze Fire gets favorable cutback to 6 furlongs; potential paltry price is the problem. Jalen Journey delivers strong efforts with machine-like consistency; don't ignore.

SIXTH: Bubble Rock should be ideally positioned in the stalker's seat. Chi Town Lady (2-for-2) and Poppy Flower (potential main speed) are an uncoupled tandem for Wes Ward barn; neither would surprise. Lady Danae failed to fire when favored in Kentucky Downs stakes last out; dangerous with return to more manageable turf course.

SEVENTH: Gufo is riding a two-race winning streak; more to come. Channel Marker is speedy and makes peak start of form cycle; very interesting. Japan was just a neck shy of top selection when a game second in stateside debut; right in the thick of this.

EIGHTH: Uncle George, training with a purpose for first start since last fall, was a winner in debut at Belmont; history repeats. Volkert notched swift late-pace figure when winning on Big B sod this past summer; worth long look. More Like It could impact if pace gets fast and furious.

NINTH: Daddy Knows gets class relief after sprint sharpener in last; improvement expected. Baby I'm Perfect is speedy and starts from the fence; big-time, front-end threat. Villainous, from streaking Tom Morley barn, could be in the garden spot if pace meltdown ensues.

TENTH: Noble Emotion is fleet-footed and could capitalize on clear lead with heads-up handling. Big Package, a determined, last-race winner, will be in the catbird seat if top selection hits the wall in the lane. Shekky Shebaz has been a repeated failure at short odds; you've been warned.

ELEVENTH: Sandro the Great failed to fire in race that was moved to wet dirt less than two weeks ago; rates close call. Eight Weeks Long was a tough-trip third in last; very playable. Tackle makes first start with maiden-claiming tag; must consider. Ghostmon is competitive on best efforts; don't ignore. Crossing Verazanno is from a dam that has produced two turf winners; worth long look at long price.
