BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Rachel Alexandra won the first matchup between racing's leading ladies, beating out undefeated mare Zenyatta in voting for Horse of the Year.
The announcement was made last night at the Eclipse Awards dinner. Rachel Alexandra received 130 votes to 99 for Zenyatta, so for the third straight year, owner Jess Jackson accepted the Horse of the Year trophy. His colt Curlin won in 2007 and 2008.
Zenyatta again won the Eclipse as the top older female, and Rachel Alexandra was top 3-year-old filly. Her trainer, Steve Asmussen, was honored after breaking his record for victories in a year. Julien Leparoux was the top jockey.
Rachel Alexandra, the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness, also beat males in the Haskell and Woodward. Other winners were Summer Bird (3-year-old colt); Gio Ponti (older male); Kodiak Kowboy (male sprinter); and Goldikova (female turf). - AP
