Steve Matthews’ Aqueduct selections for Sunday, April 9

FIRST: Dark Roast earned improved pace figure in last and could capitalize on soft lead. Crowd Funding is training consistently for first start since November; dangerous. Driving Me Crazy was a fast-figured second in last; logical, short-priced player.

SECOND: Spotty Zealous gets class relief after speed and fade in last. Southern Gentleman could be in the garden spot if pace meltdown ensues. Bear Clause turns back to more appropriate distance after valuable race over the track; worth long look.

THIRD: Governor Malibu is training sharply for potent layoff barn (Christophe Clement). Gypsum Johnny was a very game second in last; big-time threat. Jay’s Way consistently logs strong efforts; be no surprise.

FOURTH: No Tanx Blue Chip is riding a two-race winning streak and fired eye-catching half-mile workout this past Monday. Mister Monolo was an improved third in last and owns fast back figures. Saratoga Sight makes third start of form cycle; price will be tempting.

FIFTH: Tale for Ruby has trained strongly since determined win in last at Gulfstream; call based on price potential. Carrumba logged career-best number on Big A’s main track but has been sidelined since July; mixed message. Kelsocait is speedy and could play out as the controlling front-runner.

SIXTH: Broken Engagement logged solid final fraction when second to a runaway winner in debut; more to give. Blame the Thief tallied fast-figured placing on Big A surface last fall; very interesting. Sicilia Mike is right in the thick of this on best efforts.

SEVENTH: Valhalla tallied convincing maiden score when 10 cents on the dollar last time; better price today. Polar Jet also broke maiden in last start and notched three tight works in the interim. Italian Syndicate is speedy and gets class relief; very playable.

EIGHTH: Gold Shield tallied solid late-pace figure when a clear-cut winner on Tampa turf last out; pairs up victories. Macagone owns three wins and a third in four outings on Aqueduct sod; very playable. Cage Fighter logs swift numbers on “A” efforts; must consider.

NINTH: Holiday Disguise was a useful fourth in debut and fired 5-furlong bullet this past Monday; improvement predicted. Might Be also was fourth in first start and hails from potent second-out stable (Alan Goldberg); dangerous. My Girl Annie is training sharply for first start in seven weeks for Chad Brown; be no surprise. Barbie On a Budget, one of five newcomers in field, compiled solid work tab; follow the money.
