Steve Matthews’ Belmont selections for Friday, June 9

Best Bet: TIZ HE THE ONE (7)

FIRST: Sudden Surprise logged four tight works since facing too deep a field on April 28; rebounds today. Bavaro is speedy and owns fast figures on “A” game. Toohottoevenspeak overcame wide trip when a hard-charging winner last time; price will be tempting.

SECOND: Spring Folly has trained sharply since tough-trip third in debut; more to give. Sand City is working with a purpose for first start since December; worth long look. Tiffanys Freud needed last and could make forward move at fat price.

THIRD: Backsideofthemoon tallied solid final fraction when a game winner in only start on Belmont sod; pairs up. Fox Rules also won last and looms the controlling speed with aggressive ride; very dangerous. Mr. Maybe consistently logs swift numbers; right in the thick of this.

FOURTH: Rough Sea notched fast late-pace figure when second in key-race debut at Keeneland; rates call in contentious maiden field. Thaddeus was victimized by sizzling splits last time; very playable. Irst compiled four tight works for first start in seven weeks; dangerous. Valdocco has finished second in four of six starts; continues trend?

FIFTH: He Hate Me overcame slow start when a clear-cut winner in debut at Pimlico; call based on price in wide-open Tremont. Direct Dial demolished eight rivals in debut at Keeneland; very dangerous. Analyze the Odds has worked well since easy score in debut at Aqueduct; be no surprise.

SIXTH: Rocketry is riding a forward line on late-pace and final figures; set for best in third start of form cycle. Brianbakescookies displayed improved speed in last and should be tighter in second start since seven-month absence. Markitoff makes first start since claimed by Mike Maker; very interesting.

SEVENTH: Tiz He the One logged swift final fraction when winning debut at Laurel; move to grass should play to strength. Snap Decision exits fast-figured placing in last; logical, short-priced player. Ventry Bay owns speed and could prove very tough on an unchallenged lead.

EIGHTH: Stallwalkin’ Dude packs potent late wallop and consistently logs fast figures; call in intriguing True North. Chief Lion could prove very tough if able to secure early lead from Green Gratto; worth long look. Roy H ships in for high-octane Peter Miller barn after fast-figured win in last at Santa Anita; right in the thick of this.

NINTH: Sea Calisi tallied rapid late-pace figure when a confident winner in Sheepshead Bay; more to come. Suffused was less than three lengths behind to selection when second in Sheepshead Bay; can certainly close the gap. Hawksmoor logged front-running score in first start on Belmont grass; very interesting.

TENTH: Taghleeb, 1-for-1 at the demanding 2-mile distance, was pace and trip compromised when second in Man o’War. Roman Approval was a front-running winner in last and could prove very tough if allowed unchallenged lead; very playable. St. Michel makes stateside debut and is 3-for-3 at the distance; must be factored into the mix.

ELEVENTH: Lightstream logged three solid works since spinning her wheels in the Churchill Downs slop last time; forward move predicted. By the Moon upped record to 3-for-4 at Belmont when winning Vagrancy Handicap last month; very dangerous. Quezon was five lengths behind “Moon” when returning from seven-month layoff in Vagrancy; easily could close gap. High Ridge Road makes third start of form cycle; more than good enough on “A” effort.
