Steve Matthews’ Belmont selections for Sunday, May 1

Best Bet: THREE GOES BEN (2); Best Value: WAVE OF GLORY (3)

FIRST: Saint Joseph tallied improved pace figure in last and now makes peak start of form cycle; more to come. Deputy Busterstone runs late and could be the prime beneficiary if fractions get fast and furious. New York Chrome logged only career win at Belmont Park.

SECOND: There Goes Ben is training sharply for first start since November; primed and ready. Heavenly Sun logged lifetime best effort on Belmont sod last spring; worth long look at long price. Sax Change logged two one-mile workouts since last start; very interesting.

THIRD: Wave of Glory notched solid numbers in two starts at Belmont Park last fall; two crisp works in April seals the deal. Laxfield Road is speedy and rested; dangerous. Takrees owns a win and three seconds in last four starts; logical.

FOURTH: Carameaway chased hot fractions in last and notched swift half-mile drill in the interim. Myfourchix packs solid late kick and fired 5-furlong bullet on April 22; very playable. Novique won two straight at GP; right in the thick of this.

FIFTH: Bapu compiled solid work slate for potent layoff barn; weakness of field is selection’s strength. Shootout makes turf debut for Mike Maker; underlay material. Sandy Strikes could improve with switch to sod; worth a look.

SIXTH: Orient Harbor is fresh, training with a purpose and could receive ideal front-end setup in bulky field. Gold Tinker could play out as the speed of the speed with aggressive ride. Magsamelia also is fleet-footed and owns two wins on Belmont sod. War Queen gets the meds for U.S. debut for Chad Brown; must consider.

SEVENTH: Pretension is speedy and gets favorable cutback in distance. Geaux Mets was a clear-cut winner at this level in last; very dangerous. Pegasus Red owns a win and a second in two starts at Belmont Park; don’t dismiss.

EIGHTH: Vicki’s Dancer was a fast-figured, front-end winner on dirt last time and should transfer razor-sharp form to turf. Shrinking Violet packs potent late kick and is firing bullets for first start since January; very playable. Lady Shipman owns speed and very fast figs but could be feeling effects of trip to Dubai; handle with care at short ticket.

NINTH: Liana Star is riding a forward line on the numbers and projects as the controlling speed in turf debut. Complicated could be in the garden spot if top selection hits the wall in the lane. Akron Gold regressed in last after fast-figured placing in prior; bounce-back threat. Kelsocait is firing bullets for debut; follow the money.
