Steve Matthews’ Belmont selections for Sunday, Sept. 11

Best Bet: STORMIN MONARCHO (7)

Best Value: SALEM LOOP (1)

FIRST: Salem Loop logged only win at Belmont Park and should pack enhanced kick with cutback to mile; call in cheap opener. Leitrim is speedy and will prove very tough on a soft lead. Thnxtomyuncle would be aided by pace meltdown.

SECOND: Lookin At Blessing made forward move on pace and final figures last time; rates call based on price potential. Baseline also is riding an improving line on the numbers but will offer shorter odds; you make the call. Adulation bested Baseline by a nose when a strong second in debut; right in the thick of this.

THIRD: Wizardly drops and owns fast final fractions on best efforts. Banner Bill was a hard-fought second in last; bounces today? A. P. Cino owns competitive numbers on “A” game.

FOURTH: Amapola has worked three times since clear-cut placing in last; more to give. Courtmewithcarats gets the meds and moves to dirt; improvement expected. Pray for Bourbon concluded work tab with crisp half-mile drill; stay tuned to the tote.

FIFTH: Rated R Superstar was overmatched in Grade I Kings Bishop last time but moves to grass today and packs potent late kick on best; probable pace dynamics plays to strength. Too Discreet is speedy and could prove very tough if able to clear other front-runners. Conquest Enforcer also is fleet-footed and obviously wouldn’t be a surprise.

SIXTH: Via Frattina was pace and trip compromised in debut; improvement predicted. Compelled was a tough-trip third in first start; very dangerous. Defiant Honor compiled bullet-riddled work tab for debut; follow the money.

SEVENTH: Stormin Monarcho owns speed and logged tight work tab for first start since May; controlling front-runner with aggressive ride. Doyouknowsomething logged improved late-pace figure in last; dangerous. Fast Falcon is training with a purpose for first outing in 620 days; more than capable if ready.

EIGHTH: The Catmancan notched only lifetime win on Belmont sod and makes peak start of form cycle; set for best. Sir Alfred could play out as the dominant speed in turf debut; dangerous. Performance Bonus was second when part of favored entry in last; for chalk lovers only.

NINTH: Horoscope displayed early foot in debut and projects as the main speed in first turf outing. Awesome Anthony gets Lasix after even third in debut on Parx grass; very playable. Danny’s Rush should pack intensified late wallop with cutback to 6 furlongs; big-time player. Shiraz raced wide when a better-than-it-looks fourth in debut; must be factored into the mix.
