Steve Matthews’ Belmont selections for Thursday, Oct. 6

Best Bet: BARREL OF DREAMS (7)

Best Value: BLACK EAGLE (1)

FIRST: Black Eagle should find already ample late kick intensified with cutback to 6 furlongs. Liberal Spin is another that should pack enhanced wallop at shorter trip. Cuckoo’s Saloon was a fast-figured second in last; bounces today? Dr. Edgar is 2-for-2 on Belmont sod; don’t ignore.

SECOND: Madame Maybry drops after speed and fade in last; controlling front-runner on “A” game. Rahy’s Bandit is training with a purpose for first start since June; dangerous. Lil Renegade was a clear-cut second behind a runaway winner at this level in last; right in the thick of this.

THIRD: Giovanna Blues was pace and position compromised in last; 5-furlong bullet last week seals the deal. German Edition runs late and could be aided by marathon distance. Blenheim Palace was a fast-figured fourth in last; big-time threat.

FOURTH: Comet Sixty Two tallied swift late-pace figure when a tough-trip sixth in last; class drop is the clincher. Zeven own’s sprinter’s speed and could play out as the dominant front-runner; very dangerous. Kentucky Road exits clear-cut score on Monmouth grass last out; must be factored into the mix.

FIFTH: J. J. Jake adds blinkers and projects as the controlling speed. Samadi Sky is fresh and could be in the garden spot if top selection hits the wall in the lane. Fullback Foye is another that could benefit if front-end meltdown ensues.

SIXTH: Great Stuff packs potent late kick and makes first start since claimed by David Jacobson; rates close call. Dad’z Laugh also makes first start for new barn and owns speed, fast figures and razor-sharp current condition; very playable. Monster Mash is another that was claimed in last (Rudy Rodriguez) and consistently logs swift numbers.

SEVENTH: Barrel of Dreams has won three of last four and is ideally posted outside in contentious field. Uncle Southern logged swift internal and final figures when a game second in last; big-time threat. Sister Sophia notched both lifetime wins on Belmont grass; don’t overlook.

EIGHTH: Munjaz has the benefit of the fence on tight-turned, inner-turf course; call based on price potential. Decisive Triumph is riding a two-race winning streak and hails from white-hot Graham Motion barn; very playable. Request logs swift numbers with machine-like consistency. Roman Approval is speedy and gets class relief; worth long look.

NINTH: Bellelarama displayed improved speed in last and looms the swiftest of the swift with aggressive ride. Twofreeknights made forward move on the numbers last time and should have more to give in second start since two-month layoff. Song for the Soul also is fleet-footed and fired 5-furlong bullet last week; serious player. Toni Tools makes first start for Todd Pletcher after clear-cut placing in last; right in the thick of this.
