Steve Matthews’ Belmont selections for Wednesday, June 14

Best Bet: CITIZEN BY DAY (9); Best Value: POLAR AXIS (3)

FIRST: Gold Sting compiled solid work slate for debut; call right out of the box. Shidoshi displayed speed in debut on April 29 and logged four tight works for return. Positive Waves made late run in same last race as Shidoshi; dangerous. Master Merion owns three seconds and a third in four starts; likely underlay.

SECOND: Psychoanalyze logged sneaky-good work slate for debut; best guess. Smash Williams is another that’s trained sharply for first start; stay tuned to the tote. Magnanimus Man is speedy and holds experience edge; very dangerous.

THIRD: Polar Axis is fleet-footed and loves Belmont grass; call based on price potential. The Zip Zip Man logged swift final fraction when a hard-charging second in last; very playable. Peppermint Zip was a 4-length winner in first start on Big B turf; right in the thick of this.

FOURTH: Shadow Surprise could play out as the speed of the speed with aggressive ride. Skeet Shoot makes quick return and would be aided by pace meltdown. Frost Proof makes first start with a maiden claiming tag; worth long look.

FIFTH: Nisharora was pace and trip compromised when a better-than-it-looks fourth in last; rates close call. Game Girl is fleet-footed and drops; dangerous. Speak Up Sailor was a game third in last; must be factored into the mix.

SIXTH: Short Kakes is quick from the gate and could get the jump on the other front-runners with heads-up ride. Bright Side Up was given useful sprint prep in first start since six-month absence last time; very playable. Nouvelle Vague owns fast figures but has failed repeatedly at short odds; you’ve been warned.

SEVENTH: Lifelong Dreamer logged front-running score in first start on Belmont loam; pairs up. Correjon also notched wire-to-wire win the first time he touched Belmont soil; very dangerous. Discreet Encounter could impact if speed duel develops.

EIGHTH: Grand Sky is fresh and packs potent late kick on “A” game. Summer Breezing is speedy and hails from the white-hot Jeremiah Englehart barn; big-time player. The Crocheron Kid overcame traffic to log determined win in last; easily could take another.

NINTH: Citizen by Day tallied improved final fraction when a change-of-pace fourth in last; more to come. Stylish Quality is fleet-footed and makes turf debut; very dangerous. Conquest Lucknlove is speedy and gets favorable cutback to sprint; logical, short-priced player. Matinee Babe compiled solid work slate for first start since January; worth long look at long price.
