Steve Matthews’ Saratoga picks for Sunday, July 24

Best Bet: BIG MARA (8)

Best Value: WESTERN TRYST (1)

FIRST: Western Tryst was a clear-cut winner in last at Finger Lakes and fired crisp half-mile work on July 15; pairs up. Chelios owns speed, fast figs and makes first start since claimed by Michele Nevin; very playable. Because I’m Happy is 1-for-1 at Saratoga; price will be tempting.

SECOND: Grand Banks should improve with switch to sod; call based on price. Teresa Z moves to turf for Todd Pletcher after failing as the favorite in dirt debut; dangerous. Realism is from a dam that’s produced two turf winners; worth long look.

THIRD: Homespun Hero is fresh and reunited with Javier Castellano (2-for-2 when aboard); primed and ready. Evolution was a change-of-pace winner in last; dangerous. Delta Outlaw should move forward in second start since nine-month layoff.

FOURTH: Askfor Forgiveness was a fast-figured second in last; more to come. Pira should improve with return to main track. Grassarla was a clear-cut second behind a runaway winner in debut; right in the thick of this.

FIFTH: Dauphine Russe should pack intensified late wallop with slight cutback in distance. You Lie is speedy and could prove very tough on an unchallenged lead. Goodbye Sorrow is riding a two-race winning streak; big-time player.

SIXTH: Tapit Together tallied career-best late-pace figure in last start and has trained with a purpose at Fair Hill. More Than Kisses was an ultra-game second in last; very dangerous. Truth could play out as the controlling speed on the hedge.

SEVENTH: Captain’s Affair has trained sharply since surging score at Pimlico last month; pairs up wins. Old Time Hockey is rested and owns fast numbers; big-time player. Artic North needed last and packs potent late kick on “A” game.

EIGHTH: Big Mara has fired bullets since impressive victory in debut; more to give. Day after Day regressed in last after fast-figured win in debut; rebound potential. Black Betsy is fleet-footed and could prove very tough on an uncontested lead.

NINTH: Quest is training consistently for barn (Christophe Clement) that excels with fresh runners. Off Limits tallied solid final fraction when a close-up fourth in last; dangerous. Shes a True Beauty owns fast late pace figures on best efforts and is working with a purpose for first start in eight months; don’t ignore.

TENTH: Carina Mia packs strong late kick and fired 5-furlong bullet since winning Acorn; rates close call. Songbird is 8-for-8 and ships in from SoCal for Jerry Hollendorfer; obviously could romp. Weep No More owns competitive numbers on best efforts.

ELEVENTH: King of Spades impressed when breaking maiden at Churchill Downs on May 22; call if able to escape AE list. Bankers Holiday made solid late run in last and should be aided by today’s added ground. Mav has finished second in last two starts; logical contender. Defining Product owns speed and should be tighter in second start since two-month absence.
