Karlsson withdraws from US Open because of vision problem

Robert Karlsson of Sweden haswithdrawn from the U.S. Open next week at Bethpage Black because of an eyeinfection which has left him with no depth perception in his lefteye.

Karlsson is No. 14 in the world ranking and is coming off a yearin which he became the first Swede to win the Order of Merit on theEuropean Tour.

Andrew Svoboda will replace him, the second straight year he hasgot into the U.S. Open as an alternate.

The USGA said Scott Lewis, an amateur from Goleta, Calif., isnow the first alternate. Lewis gets in the U.S. Open provided noone wins the St. Jude Classic this week in Memphis, Tenn., for hissecond PGA Tour victory in the last year.
