BOSTON - Wilson Chandler's banged-up body finally forced him to take a night off. After playing about six weeks with a strained left groin that has kept him out of practice, Chandler sat out last night's game against the Celtics. He will meet with the team's medical staff Thursday at the MSG Training Center to evaluate the situation.

Though the groin probably will cause him to miss the weekend's games - the Knicks are at home Friday against the 76ers and Sunday against the Rockets - Chandler said, "I don't think it'll have me out for the rest of the season."

There will be 12 games left after this weekend and if the injury is troublesome enough, the Knicks, with nothing left to play for at this point, might prefer he shuts it down.

"I don't want to go there yet because I don't know, but it will take as long as he needs because he really needs a good summer of work, so we're not going to rush him back and risk any [more serious] injury," Mike D'Antoni said. "I'm hoping two or three days, a week. I'm hoping. But if it's the rest of the year, then it's the rest of the year and he'll have to tell me that."

Chandler, who is averaging 15.3 points per game and shooting 47.9 percent from the field in his third NBA season, played through pain in his right ankle toward the end of last season and needed surgery in June to remove bone spurs. The surgery caused him to spend most of the summer rehabilitating rather than working on his game and set him back early this season.

Eddie House has soreness in his lower Achilles, near his right heel, and also sat out last night's game.

No green day for Knicks

It had been a St. Patrick's Day tradition for the previous four seasons that the Knicks wear their alternate green uniforms around the holiday. With this season's game in Boston, however, they left the green to the Celtics and went with their home whites in last night's game. The Knicks wore the green uniforms on Christmas Day against the Heat (who wore red) for a holiday color scheme.
