Lizards’ season ends with MLL semifinal loss to Denver

Despite two goals and three assists each from attacks Paul Rabil and Rob Pannell, the Lizards’ season came to an end Saturday afternoon with a 20-17 loss to the Denver Outlaws in an MLL semifinal game played in Fairfield, Connecticut.

The defending champion Lizards (8-7) started hot, with Drew Westervelt putting them on the board 2:38 into the game. Kyle Hartzell followed with a two-point goal 19 seconds later to put the Lizards up 3-0.

Rabil gave the Lizards a 6-4 lead with a goal early in the second quarter before six straight Denver goals, including one that blew the game open, from Rockville Center product and Chaminade graduate Matt Kavanagh.

The Lizards trailed 11-8 at halftime but by late in the third quarter had fought back to tie the score at 13. A Tommy Palasek goal on an assist from Rob Pannell capped a four-goal run that knotted the contest.

Just 41 seconds later Kavanagh scored his fifth of the game and gave the Outlaws (9-6) a lead they would not relinquish.

Westervelt and Steve DeNapoli each scored in the final three minutes to bring the Lizards back to within three but that was as close as they would get.
