Ethan Paquette hit a sixth-inning grand slam and Sean Monaghan and three relievers combined on a four-hitter as Hofstra beat Fairfield, 11-0, in the first game of a baseball doubleheader yesterday.

Andrew Barbarino, Jeff Guthridge and Gregg Sarra Jr. each pitched an inning. Monaghan allowed three hits in four innings and Barbarino allowed the other hit.

Scott A'Hara hit two two-run home runs as Hofstra (4-10) won the second game, 12-11, with John Krause inducing a game-ending groundout with the tying run at first base. Mike Walraven was 4-for-5 with three RBIs.

Hofstra earned a fourth straight victory for the first time in more than three years. Fairfield is 6-8.

Briarcliffe 8, Penn State Abington 0: Rick Doht pitched a two-hitter, walking two and striking out seven. Reggie Smith had three hits and three runs scored for Briarcliffe (6-5).

St. Joseph's (L.I.) 6, Maine St. Joseph's 5: Ryan Scarsbrick earned his first college victory with 41/3 innings of one-hit relief. With runners on second and third and one out, Paul Marino had an infield hit to win it for St. Joseph's (5-7).

Softball

Hofstra sweeps. Former St. John the Baptist standout Olivia Galati pitched a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts and one walk as Hofstra (13-4) won Game 1, 2-1.

Hofstra beat Connecticut in the second game, 5-1. Michele DePasquale, Kris Root, Jess Hirschbuhl and Sara Michalowski each had two hits for the Pride as Hofstra tallied 11 hits.

Stony Brook University 5, Fairfield 0: Alyssa Struzenberg pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts, breaking the school record for career shut-outs with 19 for Stony Brook (9-7). She set the school record for wins Saturday with 59. Stony Brook finished with a 4-0 mark during this weekend's Stony Brook Invitational.

Dowling sweeps. Kristina Demel went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Felicia Mendoza pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts in Dowling's 2-0 victory over Southern New Hampshire in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

Dowling (5-9) won the second game, 3-0, as Emily Slack was 2-for-3.

SUNY-Old Westbury sweeps. Serina Booth and Samantha Siegler each scored two runs and Deborah Ciccarelli pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and an unearned run and striking out five, as SUNY-Old Westbury beat Baruch, 7-1, in Game 1.

SUNY-Old Westbury won the second game, 2-1. Alyssa Clancy and Sherrida Maxwell hit back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth inning as SUNY-Old Westbury (2-4) took a 2-0 lead. Clancy gave up three hits and one unearned run, striking out a career-high 10 in a complete game. Baruch is 3-7.

Suffolk CC-Selden sweeps. Jade Jeddrie pitched her second consecutive one-hitter, striking out seven and walking one, in a 9-1 victory over Dean in Game 1. Megan Morici was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and a home run for Suffolk CC-Selden.

Suffolk CC-Selden won the second game, 13-2. Christina Seppi pitched a two-hitter and Megan Morici was 5-for-6 with a home run and seven RBIs for Suffolk CC-Selden (8-1).

USMMA 5, Purchase College 4: Jess LaValley allowed three earned runs in a complete game and went 1-for-2 with two RBIs for USMMA (6-5) in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Nicole Kogel was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Sarah Marino was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

women's lacrosse

Adelphi 20, Assumption College 1:Michelle Ceraso scored four goals and Claire Petersen had four assists for Adelphi (5-0, 2-0) in the Northeast 10.

Dowling 15, University of New Haven 14: Stephanie Cotter and Cassandra Cronin each had four goals for Dowling (3-1).

Men's Lacrosse

C.W. Post 19, American International 3: Doug Hoch had three goals and one assist for C.W. Post (8-0).

Nassau CC 25, Catonsville College 4: Tim Bradley made seven saves and Mike Flannery had three goals and three assists for Nassau CC (4-1).
