'Bayonne Bleeder' profiled on ESPN

ESPN Films presents "The Real Rocky," at 8 p.m. Tuesday, featuring the colorful story of Chuck (The Bayonne Bleeder) Wepner, the inspiration for the fictional Rocky Balboa.

Here is a story I wrote about that, including a chat with Wepner himself.

I also wrote a story here that mostly involved transcribing the words of NHL commish Gary Bettman (Cornell '74) about the Islanders during an interview with Mike Francesa Monday.

Speaking of Cornell alums, Ken Davidoff profiled Rangers exec A.J. Preller (Cornell '99), who also is an alum of Whitman High, here.

Today I'm feeling a little silly about having questioned why the heck the Times would write a feature on bullpen phones in the middle of the World Series a couple of days back.

Someone give the editor or reporter who had that idea a bonus!

It reminds me of the time I thought Buster Olney of the Times was off base in writing a long feature on new long snapper Trey Junkin just a few days before the Giants faced the 49ers in a playoff game in January of 2003.

By the time that game was over . . . well, I wasn't questioning Buster anymore.
