As far as I can tell, all has been quiet (so far) Saturday on the Doc Rivers vs. Bill Simmons front, but for the record let's get you caught up on Friday's action in the public spat between two sports guys who have made the move from Boston to L.A.
You might recall that Thursday night during the NBA draft Rivers said in an ESPN interview that he would like to call Simmons an "idiot" for accusing him of quitting on the Celtics but added he is too classy for that.
Simmons responded by suggesting Rivers find a narrative about his departure from Boston and commit to it. "When he sticks to a story, I'll believe the truth," Simmons said.
Friday morning, Rivers said this on Dan Patrick's radio show:
"Bill's a fan. Is he qualified to do the NBA? We can debate that all day. But Bill's a fan. I get that. Not a friend of mine or a fan of mine and he never has been. I rarely respond, you know that. I don't do it very often, but I'd just kind of had enough of that.
"I thought it kind of ruined the broacast last night because he kept bringing it up, so it was almost like he had an agenda and I was just getting tired of it. I wish we were on the court."
On WEEI radio in Boston, meanwhile, Rivers suggested Simmons had tried to get him fired by writing letters to the Celtics and seeking a meeting with the owners.
Simmons then took to Twitter, where he has more than 2.1 million followers. After tweeting about Rivers' comments on WEEI, Simmons wrote:
"The quote I just retweeted is an outright, 100 percent lie. I'd be careful, Glenn. Seriously. Stop talking. You are making sh*t up."
(Glenn is Rivers' given name.)
Simmons also took a shot at Rivers for the fact his son Jeremiah went on Twitter to attack Simmons. Among other things Jeremiah called him an "internet bully."
Wrote Simmons, "When I get home I'm signing up my 5 and a half year old son for Twitter so he can defend me against Doc Rivers' kids."
Well, then. Perhaps this would be a good time for Brian Cashman to issue a strongly worded suggestion to both sides about what they should do now.
