CBS/Turner reportedly outbids ESPN for NCAA rights

We end our blogging week with this potentially pivotal news from the great John Ourand of Sports Business Journal/Daily:

CBS and Turner appear likely to outbid ESPN for rights to the newly expanded, 96-team NCAA Tournament beginning next season.

SBJ/SBD reports that CBS and Turner have offered an average of $840 million over 14 years compared to ESPN's final offer of around $800 million over the same period.

Maybe ESPN is saving up its money for its bid on the 2014 and '16 Olympics.

Under the current NCAA deal with CBS, the colleges were to receive about $2 billion over the next three years.

The NCAA said nothing is finalized yet regarding whether to opt out of the existing deal and expand the tournament and if so whether to accept the CBS/Turner bid.

Ciao. Enjoy the second game of the Flyers-Devils series on MSG Plus.

(BTW, ratings for Game 1 were up 103 percent compared to Game 1 of the Devils' first-round series last year.)
