Chess? Cool? Yup

HBO’s recently debuted documentary, “Bobby Fischer Against the World,’’ which repeats at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, is a fascinating look full of archival footage at a staggering genius staggered by demons.

Among the highlights is the news conference in Iceland in which ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap stares down Fischer, a lapsed friend of his late father, Dick. (Jeremy recounts the incident in detail in the recent book about ESPN, “Those Guys Have All the Fun.’’)

But for many viewers under 50, the biggest revelation will be that thanks to Fischer chess got so big in the summer of 1972 that it led network evening newscasts and even among American teenagers became, however briefly, dare we say it? Yup. Cool.
