Fernando Valenzuela, revisited

"Fernando Nation," Tuesday night's entry in ESPN's "30 for 30" series, looks back at the mania that accompanied Fernando Valenzuela's first full season in the majors in 1981.

The film from Mexican-born, L.A.-raised, Brooklyn-based director Cruz Angeles will be an education for most viewers under 40 or so.

For those of us older than that - for me, anyway - the biggest revelation will be the impact the building of Dodger Stadium and the development of Chavez Ravine had on the area's Mexican-American community.

One of the film's biggest joys: Vintage radio clips of Vin Scully.

Meanwhile, tonight on HBO's "Real Sports," the show visits close friends Marc Buoniconti and Herman Jacobs, 25 years to the day after the latter tackled the former, leaving him paralyzed.
