Thom Brennaman and Brian Billick will call Sunday's Seahawks-Falcons game, a development that caused quite a stir when Newsday first reported it, what with Fox having leaped them over the presumed No. 2 team of Kenny Albert, Daryl Johnston and Tony Siragusa.

But Fox Sports co-president Eric Shanks insisted Wednesday that the news was not quite as newsy as the rest of us thought it was.

"It was a bit of a shock to me that people are talking about it," he said. "Everybody is going to be rewarded for a job well done and we thought that Thom and Brian and the whole crew did a great job this year. Their body of work said they deserved to do a playoff game, so they got it."

OK, so does this mean they have supplanted Kenny, Moose and Goose as the No. 2 team moving forward? Shanks rejected the premise of the question, saying that for the last two seasons the total audiences of games done by the two announcer teams were within a couple of percentage points of one another.

"We viewed both of those crews for the last couple of years, if not last three years, both as tremendous crews to follow Joe [Buck] and Troy [Aikman]," he said. "I don’t think we necessarily view either one as a No. 2."
